The aim of the Sustainability Appraisal (SA) is to promote sustainable development by ensuring better integration of sustainability considerations into the preparation and adoption of plans.
The SA considers a plan's implications from a social, economic and environmental perspective.
All Development Plan Documents (DPDs) must undergo a Sustainability Appraisal (SA) as required by the Planning and Compulsory Purchase Act 2004. Government guidance states SA should also integrate the requirements of the European Directive 2001/42/EC, known as the Strategic Environment Assessment (SEA).

The core strategy and site specific allocations preferred options previously underwent full SA process. PPS12 guidance indicates that where changes to a DPD are minimal, updating the SA can be in the form of an annex. This annex was drafted as part of the SA commentary process.
