Severe weather conditions can cause widespread disruption and even pose a threat to safety. The MET Office monitors weather conditions in the UK and uses the National Severe Weather Warning Service to issue warnings when severe weather is likely.
Severe weather refers to any dangerous or intense weather which could cause damage to buildings, serious social disruption and/or loss of human life. In Brent, our most common severe weather events are:
- thunderstorms
- prolonged rainfall (mainly in the late water and early spring)
- surface water floods occur when an urban drainage system is overwhelmed, water rises gradually giving people time to relocate temporarily
- flash floods occur when a high velocity rain falls in a very short period of time
- drought and extreme heat
- heavy snow and extreme cold
- strong winds.
These events have a major impact across Brent. For more information on staying safe against potential emergency situations please see the preparing for emergencies and what to do in an emergency pages.
