Every year the Summer Reading Challenge encourages and supports children to enjoy a summer of brilliant books. This year's theme is Silly Squad - a celebration of funny books, happiness and laughter!

From June to September, 4 to 11-year-olds in Brent can join a new online version of the Summer Reading Challenge, from Brent Libraries and The Reading Agency.

How to sign up:
Step 1 Silly squadYou can sign up at the Silly Squad website. Through the website you can play games, rate and review books to unlock badges and download fun activities. You can also sign up in Brent Libraries, where we have great activities for you to take home, or ask your teacher! 
Step 2  Silly squadGet reading - read at least 6 library books over the summer holiday.
Step 3 Silly squadFinish the Challenge and collect your brilliant Silly Squad certificate!


Free e-books and audio-books for children

You can download two free apps - Libby and Borrowbox - to access books from our e-library.

We have a new collection of titles for the Summer Reading Challenge from authors including Michael Morpurgo, Derek Landy, Lauren Child, David Walliams, and Summer Reading Challenge ambassadors David Baddiel and Ben Fogle, amongst many others.

Join bestselling cartoonist and comic art tutor James Parsons for a special Zoom cartooning workshop with Brent Libraries! James will be showing you how to draw super-wacky animal characters. All you'll need is a pencil and paper... and loads of imagination! For children aged 6 – 12. Free.

The King with Dirty FeetSilly squad

Thursday 13 August
2.30 – 3pm

Author and performer Sally-Pomme Clayton brings to life a funny, sweet and interactive folktale. The king has not had a bath for a whole year, and he is starting to smell. When the king finally bathes in the river, he can't get his feet clean. Can you help solve the problem of the king's dirty feet?  For children aged 4 – 11. Free.

Science Session
Silly squad

Tuesday 18 August 4pm – 4:45pm

Learn some amazing science experiments that you can try at home! Follow along - you'll need an ice cube, a bowl, some water, long thread, salt, a black felt tip pen & some kitchen roll handy.

Zarina’s Orchard and the FirebirdSilly squad

Thursday 20 August
2.30 – 3pm

Sally Pomme-Clayton brings to life a magical fairytale from Central Asia. Meet bold heroine Zarina and her 39 (yes 39) sisters! Her country has turned to dust, there is no water and it hasn’t rained for a whole year. Zarina doesn’t know what to do and her sisters are no help at all!  Then the glittering Firebird appears and comes to Zarina’s aid.  For children aged 6 – 11. Free.
