While working to support safety and wellbeing for all, we are committed to engaging with GRT residents in a way that honours their identity and ensures they are treated with fairness, dignity and respect.
Many GRT families face challenges such as discrimination or problems finding housing, healthcare, education and financial help. If you’re part of the GRT community, this page explains where you can find support and how we can help.
Understanding Gypsy, Roma and Traveller Communities
The term Gypsy, Roma and Traveller (GRT) covers several different ethnic and cultural groups, including:
- Romany Gypsies (from England, Wales and Scotland)
- Irish Travellers
- Roma people from Central and Eastern Europe
Each of these groups has their own customs, languages and ways of life, with many having a tradition of travelling. All are protected by law under the Equality Act 2010.
There are also other groups with a travelling lifestyle, including:
- Travelling show people
- Boat or barge dwellers
- Vehicle or van dwellers
- New travellers
While not always protected under the law in the same way, these groups also follow long-standing traditions of travelling and living in mobile homes.
